
Gary "G" Wheat: Sax
A graduate of the University of Alabama Jazz Studies program in 1999 where he studied with Tom Wolfe and Dr. Jonathan Noffsinger. While in college, Gary took the roll of lead tenor or lead alto in the UA Jazz Ensemble and picked up outstanding soloist awards from four judges at the 1998 Notre Dame Jazz Festival, most notably from Frank Wess. Currently living in Birmingham, Gary teaches saxophone lessons and performs in Tuscaloosa/Birmingham area with the funk group Meteorite, as well as his own jazz groups. Being with the Tuscaloosa Horns since 1999, Gary has performance experience with The Temptations, O'Jays, Lou Marini, Mary Wilson & The Supremes, and Slo-Gin 60's Revue. Wheat's primary influences are Charlie Parker, Sonny Stitt, Joe Lovano, Joshua Redman, and Michael Brecker; basically anyone who tries to "play clean and look for the pretty notes." Bird's motto and G's goal in playing.
