Dr. Jon Noffsinger: Sax
(Doc) is professor of saxophone & jazz studies at the University of Alabama. He joined the faculty of the School of Music in 1993. Previously, he held positions at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Illinois and Albion College, in Albion, Michigan. A native of Murray, Kentucky, Jonathan Noffsinger received his BME from Murray State University and his MM in Saxophone Performance from Louisiana State University. Mr. Noffsinger won a coveted gold medal in Saxophone Performance as a student of Jean-Marie Londeix at the National Conservatory in Bordeaux, France and earned the DMA at Michigan State University where he studied with James Forger. Other awards and honors include: Invited Performer to the 1998 Biennial Conference of the North American Saxophone Alliance, First Prize at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, Selected Performer at the 9th World Saxophone Congress in Tokyo, Japan, Semi-finalist in Concert Artists Guild's New York Competition as both a chamber player and soloist, Winner of the LSU Concerto Competition, and NAJE Outstanding Soloist at the Memphis Jazz Festival. Mr. Noffsinger’s students have garnered many honors including outstanding soloist awards at the Notre Dame Jazz Festival and invited performances at the 1998 NASA Biennial Conference and numerous regional conferences and workshops. They likewise perform regularly as professionals in a variety of venues and in recording studios throughout the region. Mr. Noffsinger performs regularly throughout the US, Europe, and Japan as a soloist and clinician. Furthermore, he has played with professional productions of "42nd Street," "A Chorus Line," "West Side Story," "Guys and Dolls," and with performing artists Crystal Gayle, Frankie Avalon, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, Red Skelton, Bob Hope and the Temptations. Additionally, as a member of the Saxophone Quartet MSUGSQ he has recorded a compact disc with Sunrise Studios of Japan which has been released under the ensemble's name (SRCD-153). And, as one of the Tuscaloosa Horns Jonathan Noffsinger’s name has been included on the list of Music Achievers in the Alabama Music Hall of Fame.
